Simon Laurent Nolet (born September 23, 1941 in Saint-Odilon-de-Cranbourne , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout , who in the course of his active career between and 1977 among other things 596 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Kansas City Scouts , Pittsburgh Penguins and Colorado Rockies played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position . The two-time All-Star celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Philadelphia Flyers, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1974 . After the end of his career, he worked briefly as a coach for various teams and from 1990 for over 25 years as a scout for his former team from Philadelphia.
Career
Nolet spent his junior years from 1960 first in his home province of Québec with the Citadelles de Québec in the Ligue de hockey junior du Québec . At the end of the 1961/62 season , the striker made his professional debut when he ran up for the As de Québec in the American Hockey League . In the summer of 1962, the French-Canadian then switched permanently to the professional sector. He joined the Windsor Maple Leafs from the province of Nova Scotia , for which he ran up for two years until 1964 in the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League . In the meantime, he was also in the squad of league rivals Moncton Hawks .
From the summer of 1964, Nolet returned to Québec. In addition to other missions for the As de Québec, he led the Castors de Sherbrooke to win the Allan Cup . He then switched completely to the AHL to the As after the sporadic periods of deployment in previous years. The attacker spent two full seasons with the team before the franchise was bought out by the newly formed Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League , whereby Nolet's transfer rights were also transferred to the expansion team. During the 1967/68 season , Nolet made his debut in four games for the Flyers, but continued to play mainly for the As de Québec, which he led to the final of the Calder Cup . There the team was subject to the Rochester Americans . For the French-Canadian, however, the game year ended in a conciliatory manner, as his 96 scorer points earned him the John B. Sollenberger Trophy and he was also appointed to the AHL Second All-Star Team . As a result, his stakes in the NHL increased. Over the following two seasons, his playing time was divided between Québec and Philadelphia.
It was not until the 1979/71 season that Nolet made the final leap into the NHL and he played for the Philadelphia Flyers for the next four years. There he was a steady point collector before he became obsolete when Reggie Leach was engaged in May 1974. He crowned his commitment by winning the Stanley Cup in the 1974 playoffs as part of the so-called " Broad Street Bullies " before he was left unprotected by the Flyers in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft . Because of his experience in the league, he was selected by the newly formed Kansas City Scouts and immediately named their team captain. For the next almost two years he was an integral part of the team, before moving to the middle of the 1975/76 season in January 1976 together with Ed Gilbert and a first-round suffrage in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft in exchange for Steve Durbano , Chuck Arnason and a First round suffrage of the same draft was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins .
For the Penguins, Nolet completed only 39 season games and three more in the playoffs. In September 1976 he was transferred to the Colorado Rockies - that's what the Kansas City Scouts called themselves after moving from Kansas City in the state of Missouri to Denver in the state of Colorado . With him also goalkeeper Michel Plasse moved to the Rockies and Colin Campbell was loaned from Pittsburgh for the 1976/77 season. This was the compensation payable to the Rockies after the Penguins signed free agent Denis Herron the previous month. In the Colorado Rockies, Nolet was immediately reappointed team captain. He held this position until the end of his career in the summer of 1977, when he retired from active sport at the age of 35.
As a result, Nolet took a longer break and did not return to the public until 1982. For the following five seasons up to the summer of 1987 he worked as an assistant coach of the Nordiques de Québec under head coach Michel Bergeron . During the 1987/88 season he was then appointed head coach of the Fredericton Express farm team from the AHL, replacing Ron Lapointe , who had been promoted to head coach of the Nordiques. With the Express he reached the final of the Calder Cup, but his engagement was not continued. After a two-year hiatus, his ex-team Philadelphia Flyers finally signed him as a scout for the amateur sector. Nolet held this post for a total of 28 years until the end of the 2017/18 season .
