William Anthony "Bill" Derlago (born August 25, 1958 in Birtle , Manitoba ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The center played over 500 games for five teams in the National Hockey League between 1978 and 1987 , most of them for the Toronto Maple Leafs .
Career
Bill Derlago was born in Birtle and grew up in nearby Beulah . In his youth he ran for the McCauley Selects and the Brandon Travelers , among others , before moving to the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Canadian Hockey League (WCHL) in 1974 . There he had an outstanding junior career, with the attacker recording more than 100 scorer points in each of his three complete seasons . In the 1976/77 season he led the entire WCHL with 176 points, so that he was honored with the Brownridge Trophy , while he was also the best goalscorer in the league with 96 hits and was elected to the WCHL First All-Star Team . In the subsequent playoffs for the President's Cup , the Canadian was also number one on the scorer list, but the Wheat Kings lost 4-1 to the New Westminster Bruins in the final . He defended the title of best goalscorer the following year with 89 goals, so that he was included in the WCHL Second All-Star Team . Then chose him Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1978 in fourth position.
The move to the professional field was made difficult by a knee injury, due to which Derlago completed only nine games for Vancouver in the National Hockey League (NHL) in the 1978/79 season ; in addition, there were eleven missions for the Dallas Black Hawks in the Central Hockey League , the farm team of the Canucks. He then spent just under half a season in the Pacific Northwest, as he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs after unfulfilled expectations in February 1980 with Rick Vaive . In return, Tiger Williams and Jerry Butler moved to Vancouver. In the Maple Leafs jersey, the center confirmed its scorer qualities from junior times, so in the season 1980/81 it recorded his career best with 84 points from 75 games and for the first time a points average of over 1.0 per game. Two years later it also hit the 40 goal mark.
After more than five years in Toronto, Derlago was transferred to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Tom Fergus in October 1985 , who used him in a more defensive role and sent him to the Winnipeg Jets for Wade Campbell in January 1986 . In his homeland of Manitoba, he spent a year without being able to build on his previous achievements, and was given in January 1987 for a four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 1989 to the Nordiques de Québec . This should represent his last NHL station, where he was in roughly equal parts with the farm team, the Fredericton Express , in the American Hockey League . He then let his career at HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A end and ended his active career in 1988, in which he had played a total of 568 NHL games and scored 421 points.
