Career
Roberts was born in Detroit , Michigan . His parents were big fans of the Detroit Red Wings and named him after Red Wings legend Gordie Howe .
As a junior player he was active in 1973/74 for the Detroit Jr. Red Wings in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League and in the 1974/75 season for the Victoria Cougars in the Western Canada Hockey League . In August 1975 he signed a contract with the New England Whalers from the World Hockey Association (WHA). For the Whalers, he completed 357 WHA games in the following four years. During this time he was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft . After the WHA ceased playing and the Whalers were accepted into the National Hockey League (NHL), the Hartford Whalers received the NHL rights to the player from the Canadiens via the NHL Expansion Draft 1979 .
On December 16, 1980 he was transferred from the Whalers to the Minnesota North Stars , Hartford received Mike Fidler in return . After eight seasons in Minnesota, in which he established himself as a tough player, he was released on February 8, 1988 to the Philadelphia Flyers . After only eleven games for the Flyers, he was passed on to the St. Louis Blues , where he spent the following four seasons.
In October 1990 Gordie Roberts was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins . The defensive player had his most successful sporting period in Pittsburgh and won the Stanley Cup in the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons . Following the second Stanley Cup win, his contract expired and Roberts signed a new contract with the Boston Bruins , for which he was active from 1992 to 1994. In the 1992/93 season he became the first American to play more than 1,000 games in the National Hockey League.
After Roberts played for the Chicago Wolves and the Minnesota Moose in the International Hockey League between 1994 and 1996 , he ended his playing career. He then worked from 1997 to 1999 for two seasons as Jim Schoenfeld's assistant coach at the Phoenix Coyotes . From 2007 to 2010 he was a scout for the Montréal Canadiens. Since the 2011/12 season he has been assistant coach for the ice hockey team at Hamline University , a private university from the US state of Minnesota , which plays in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
In 1999, Gordie Roberts was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame for his services to ice hockey in the United States .
International
Gordie Roberts represented his home country with the US national team for the first time at the 1982 World Cup , where he finished eighth and last with his team. He had another assignment at the Canada Cup 1984 , in which the Americans missed a medal in the semi-finals against the Swedish national team . His third and final use was at the 1987 World Cup , which ended the US selection in seventh place.
