Phillip Douglas Russell (born July 21, 1952 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout , who played 1089 games for the Chicago Black Hawks , Atlanta Flames , Calgary Flames during his playing career between 1970 and 1988 , New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabers has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In addition, after his active career between 1988 and 2008 he worked as assistant coach for the Frankfurt Lions from the German Ice Hockey League and scout for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks from the NHL.

Career

Russell spent his junior years between 1970 and 1972 with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Canada Hockey League . With the team, the defender won the President's Cup of the WCHL twice in a row and was represented with the team in both years in the Memorial Cup , which they could not win in either year. He completed his second junior year as a player with the most penalty minutes, but also scored 59 points and was thus appointed to the league's First All-Star team. Following his time with the juniors, Russell was selected in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft in 13th overall position by the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League .

Right at the beginning of the 1972/73 season , the defender managed to establish himself as a regular in the Black Hawks' squad. In total, Russell ran almost seven full playing years for Chicago and was invited to the NHL All-Star Game twice during this time . At the end of the 1978/79 season , the defensive player was transferred to the Atlanta Flames along with Ivan Boldirev and Darcy Rota , while Tom Lysiak , Pat Ribble , Harold Phillipoff , Greg Fox and Miles Zaharko made their way to Chicago. With the move to the Flames, the previous persistence in Russell's NHL career ended abruptly. The Canadian ended the season and the following in Atlanta and then moved the franchise across the border into Calgary, Canada in the summer of 1980 . There the team played from then on under the name Calgary Flames . The defender stayed with the club until the end of the 1982/83 season and was the second team captain in franchise history between 1981 and 1983 before a transfer deal with Mel Bridgman led him to the New Jersey Devils . In return, Steve Tambellini and Joel Quenneville moved to Calgary.

Russell played for the Devils for the next three years until 1986 and completed his third All-Star Game in 1985 . At the end of the 1985/86 season , the third transfer in his career finally took place, when he was given to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for a twelve-round vote in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft . For the Sabers, Russell played a total of 18 games until the 1986/87 season before he moved to Switzerland during the season. For EHC Olten he completed six games in the National League A . His last stop was in the 1987/88 season, the Kalamazoo Wings from the International Hockey League , before ending his active career at the age of 36.

Afterwards Russell began to work as a trainer and scout . From 1988 to 1991 he was the assistant coach of the Muskegon Lumberjacks from the IHL, before he was responsible for them in the 1991/92 season . With the move of the team, he kept this post with the Cleveland Lumberjacks in the following game year. For the 1993/94 season , the Canadian was relieved of the post of head coach and appointed assistant general manager and director of the scouting department for the next two years. At the same time he was hired as a scout by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the NHL. He occupied this position until the summer of 1997, before he worked in the same position for his ex-team, the Chicago Blackhawks.

With the beginning of the 1999/2000 season , Russell began to work again as a coach. Initially for one season as assistant coach with the Cleveland Lumberjacks under head coach Blair MacDonald , followed by his first international stint with the Frankfurt Lions from the German Ice Hockey League, also under MacDonald. Russell's involvement in Frankfurt ended prematurely in January 2001. After a long break, he did not return to the ice hockey business until the 2004/05 season and until the summer of 2006 he assisted Dirk Graham with the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League . His last position was in the 2007/08 season with the Pensacola Ice Pilots at ECHL .

International

For his home country Russell played at the World Championships in 1977 in the Austrian capital Vienna and in 1986 in the Soviet capital Moscow . He was able to win the bronze medal with the Canadians in 1986, to which he contributed in eight tournament games with an assist. At the World Championships seven years earlier, the maple leaves landed in thankless fourth place and thus outside the medal ranks. Russell played a total of 18 World Cup games during his career, preparing four goals.
