Miles Zaharko (born April 30, 1957 in Mannville , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 132 games for the Atlanta Flames and Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1973 and 1984 contested the position of defender . However, Zaharko celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the New Brunswick Hawks by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 1982.
Career
Zaharko spent a very unsteady junior period between 1973 and 1977, which saw him play in a total of three different junior leagues. First, the defender was active in the 1973/74 season in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL), where he was active for the American franchise Bellingham Blazers . The following year he went on the ice in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) for the Vermilion Bruins . With a total of 84 scorer points , including 40 goals, the defender was so impressive that he was signed for the 1975/76 season by the New Westminster Bruins from the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), which at the time was considered one of the best junior teams in Canada . As a result, Zaharko won the championship trophy in the form of the President's Cup in his first season in the league with the team . He repeated the success with the team the following year. In addition, the Bruins also secured the double by winning the prestigious Memorial Cup in 1977 . After four successful years in the junior division, the defender was both in the NHL Amateur Draft 1977 in the second round in 20th place by the Atlanta Flames from the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Winnipeg Jets from the NHL at the time competing World Hockey Association (WHA) already selected in eighth overall position.
The 20-year-old talent then signed a contract with the Atlanta Flames and became a regular in his rookie season. In 71 games he reached 20 points scorer. Nevertheless, Zaharko spent the following year until March 1979 exclusively with Atlanta's farm team , the Tulsa Oilers , from the Central Hockey League (CHL) before he became part of the largest transfer business in NHL history - measured by the players involved. Together with Tom Lysiak , Greg Fox , Harold Phillipoff and Pat Ribble he was transferred to the Chicago Black Hawks , while Ivan Boldirev , Darcy Rota and Phil Russell were sent to the Flames. In the organization of the Chicago Black Hawks, however, the Canadian did not succeed in asserting himself again in the NHL. So he played the following four years mostly in the farm team of Chicago in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he celebrated in the 1981/82 season in the jersey of the New Brunswick Hawks by winning the Calder Cup, the greatest success of his professional career. In the same season he was also appointed to the AHL Second All-Star Team .
After he had spent completely in the AHL with the Springfield Indians in the 1982/83 season and had only played 58 games for Chicago in the NHL over a period of four years, Zaharko turned his back on the North American continent for the 1983/84 season . He moved to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , where the Duisburger SC had achieved a real transfer coup with his commitment. He was involved in seven Duisburg goals in twelve missions before he declared his career prematurely over in the summer of 1984 at the age of 27.
