The NHL Entry Draft 1986 took place on June 21, 1986 in the Forum de Montréal in Montréal in the Canadian province of Québec . In the 24th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 252 players in twelve rounds. The Canadian winger Joe Murphy was selected by the Detroit Red Wings as the first overall draft pick . Jimmy Carson for the Los Angeles Kings and Neil Brady for the New Jersey Devils followed in second and third . The order of the draft resulted from the reversed final table of the past 1985/86 season , with the playoff teams after the teams that had missed the playoffs.
Parallel to the Entry Draft 1986, the NHL Supplemental Draft was introduced that year , in which additional players from the US college sector could be signed. In the meantime, the tendencies of the previous year continued with comparatively few selected Europeans and a generally weaker vintage. Only Vincent Damphousse and Brian Leetch reached the milestone of 1000 scorer points , while so far only Leetch has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame . On the contrary, Neil Brady was second and to date last third overall (after Terry Caffery , 1966), who completed less than 100 NHL games. In addition, with Tom Quinlan, another player was drawn who would later make a career in the MLB - as was Tom Glavine, who was selected in 1984 . Other notable actors include Zarley Zalapski , Scott Young , Craig Janney , Adam Graves , Teppo Numminen , Jyrki Lumme , Ron Tugnutt , Johan Garpenlöv , Darren Turcotte , Lyle Odelein and Wladimir Krutow .
