Dennis James Vaske (born October 11, 1967 in Rockford , Illinois ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 257 games for the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League between 1986 and 1999 ( NHL) in the position of defender . His greatest career success celebrated Vaske, whose career was marked by numerous severe concussions , but in the service of the Providence Bruins by winning the Calder Cupof the American Hockey League (AHL) in 1999.

Career

Vaske played between 1984 and 1986 at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth , Michigan , where he grew up and spent his youth. Starting from high school , the defender in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft was selected in the second round in 38th place by the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League (NHL). The 18-year-old decided to study first and therefore enrolled at the University of Minnesota Duluth for the 1986/87 school year . At the same time, he pursued his ice hockey career in the university team, the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs , on. Between 1986 and 1990 he played with the team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Especially in his last two seasons at the university, Vaske was able to recommend himself for a professional career with 28 and 29 scorer points . In the previous two years he had only had nine goal participations.

For the 1990/91 season , the defender received a contract with the New York Islanders after completing his studies. There he came to work for the Capital District Islanders farm team during the season . Only at the end of the regular season did the rookie debut in the NHL for New York. In the following season Vaske then commuted between the cadres of the farm team and the NHL club, before he played again firmly with the Capital District Islanders in the first half of the 1992/93 season. In January 1993 he finally managed to get a regular place in the NHL, whereby he reached the final of the Eastern Conference with the team in the course of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1993 . The series was lost, however, with 1: 4 against the Canadiens de Montréal . In the following two seasons - including the 1994/95 NHL season shortened by the lockout  - the American established himself in the league and was an integral part of the Isles' defensive network .

Vaske's development did not continue positively from the 1995/96 game year . In each of the following three seasons from October 1995, the defensive player suffered a serious concussion in mid-November , so he was out the rest of the season and never played more than 20 games. The Islanders did not extend the contract of their former draft election after the 1997/98 season , whereupon Vaske signed a contract with the Boston Bruins as a free agent in September 1998 . For the Bruins he came in the first quarter of the 1998/99 season to three missions, otherwise he ran for their cooperation partner Providence Bruins in the AHL. With the Providence Bruins, the defender won the Calder Cup at the end of the season . As a result of his greatest career success, he ended his time as an active after the season at the age of 31.

International

For his home country Vaske took part with the US national team at the 1992 World Cup in Czechoslovakia . He remained pointless in six tournament appearances and finished the tournament with the team in seventh place.
