While he was still active, Rob Wilson took over a coaching position for the first time and was from 2003 player-coach of the Newcastle Vipers . In the 2005/06 season , his team was the first time British playoff winners after the final victory over the Sheffield Steelers . From 2006 to 2011 he was also assistant coach of the British national team . After the end of his playing career in 2009, Wilson was also head coach of the Newcastle Vipers in the EIHL in the 2009/10 season , in which his team reached the playoff quarter-finals. In 2010 he left Great Britain and was coach of HC Neumarkt in the Italian A2 series . Neumarkt reached the playoff quarter-finals in the 2010/11 season, and made it to the semi-finals the following year. After two years, the former defender left Neumarkt and became the head coach of Ritten Sport in Serie A1 . In his first season at Ritten, his team was first in the intermediate round, but then eliminated in the playoff quarter-finals. In the 2013/14 season , his team took first place in the main round and, after defeating HC Pustertal in the final series, became Italian champions for the first time in the club's history .

After the championship title in 2014, Wilson left Ritten and signed a one-year contract with the Straubing Tigers in the DEL , but was released at the end of November of the same year due to unsuccessfulness.

In December 2014 he took over the position of assistant coach at the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , for the 2015/16 season Wilson was promoted to head coach and led the team in his first year to the playoff semi-finals, in which they lost Wolfsburg. His contract runs until 2019. Following the main round of the 2016/17 season, he was named “Trainer of the Year” in the DEL. In the subsequent DEL championship round, Wilson led the Franks into the semi-finals, where they were eliminated against Wolfsburg as in the previous year.
