Šančiai

Žemieji Šančiai

Šančiai is a district of Kaunas , the second largest city in Lithuania . It extends southeast of Kaunas station , on the right bank of the Memel . The north-eastern part of Šančiai is Aukštieji Šančiai and the southern part is Žemieji Šančiai. In the southeast is the Panemunė Bridge , which connects Šančiai with the Panemunė District . The Čiurlionis Bridge in the northwest connects with Freda . There is the Aukštieji Šančiai hill fort , the Kaunas railway tunnel , several churches, the military cemetery (since 1883), a hospital ( Respublikinė Kauno ligoninė ) and a polyclinic , the research institutes Lietuvos energetikos institutas and Architektūros ir statybos institutas , the faculties of science and computer science Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas and a library (since 1923).

history

In 1879 the German iron factory " Vestfalija " was built. In 1889 there were 2000 people living here, in 1897 around 12,900 inhabitants. In 1913 the iron factory had 1,300 workers. There was the soap factory “ Ringuva ” (from 1920), “ AB Drobė ” factory (from 1922), the sock factory “ Kotton ” (from 1925) and the chocolate factory “ Tilka ” (from 1929).
