Motiejus Šumauskas

Motiejus Šumauskas (born November 2, 1905 in Kaunas , † May 28, 1982 in Vilnius ) was a Soviet-Lithuanian politician , member of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ) and chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR .

Life

In 1924 he joined the Communist Party of Lithuania and later rose to become chairman of the Communist Trade Union Confederation. On July 14, 1940, he was elected a member of the People's Assembly (Liaudies Seimas), which a week later approved the accession of Lithuania to the Soviet Union . Later, contrary to the tradition that the post in the Baltic states was held by a Russian posted, he was second secretary of the LKP for a year after the power struggles in the Kremlin after the death of Josef Stalin in March 1953 with the support of Lavrenti Beria . In 1940 he was Deputy Minister of Labor.

On January 16, 1956, he succeeded Mečislovas Gedvilas as chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR . He held this office until April 14, 1967, when he succeeded Justas Paleckis as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR and thus de facto became President of Parliament. At the same time, due to this office, he was Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR . On December 24, 1975, he was replaced in this office by Antanas Barkauskas .
