Mečislovas Gedvilas
Mečislovas Gedvilas (born November 19, 1901 in Bubiai near Šiauliai , † February 15, 1981 in Vilnius ) was a Soviet-Lithuanian politician , member of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ) and chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR .
Life
After school he completed a teacher training course , after which he was from 1923 to 1927 teacher at the high school in Palanga .
In 1934 he joined the Lithuanian Communist Party ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partijos ). On July 14, 1940, he became a member of the People's Assembly (Liaudies Seimas), which a week later approved the accession of Lithuania to the Soviet Union . At this time he was also People's Commissar for Home Affairs and then briefly Vice-President of Liaudies Seimas .
After joining, he became Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars on August 25, 1940 and thus de facto first Prime Minister of the Lithuanian SSR . After the renaming of this body on April 2, 1946, he was then chairman of the Council of Ministers . During his reign, Lithuania was fundamentally sovietized, which ultimately led to the denationalization of the previously independent republic.
Successor as Prime Minister was Motiejus Šumauskas on January 16, 1956 , in whose government he was Minister of Education until 1973, as under Prime Minister Juozas Maniūšis .
