AB Drobė was the largest wool fabric manufacturing company in Lithuania , based in Kaunas . The company employed 3,900 people (1976). There were several factories in Soviet Lithuania : Kauno vilnonių audinių fabrikas ("Drobė"), Kauno audimo ir taurinimo fabrikas ("Lima"), Viečiūnų verpimo fabrikas (near Varėna ) and Šilutės audimo fabrikas .
history
In 1920, entrepreneurs of Lithuanian origin from New York City founded the company “Drobės audimo ir prekybos įmonė”. The "Drobė" fabric factory was founded in 1922, the "Lima" textile factory in 1937, a colliery from "Drobė" (reorganized as a factory from 1975) in Viečiūnai (in the Rajong municipality of Varėna ) in 1963 and the Šilutė weaving factory in 1974. In 1975 they produced 5.6 million meters of fabric and 771.7 million tons of yarn worth 164.9 million rubles . They exported to the Soviet Union .
After privatization, Akcinė bendrovė "Drobė" was owned by private individuals. In 2005 the company achieved sales of 72 million litas (21 million euros ). 5% (200,000 meters of fabric) of the total annual output (3.5 million fabrics) was produced for “ Hugo Boss ”; others for “ Giorgio Armani ”, “ Calvin Klein ”, “ Versace ”, “ Christian Dior ” and others. In 2006 there were 850 employees. In 2008 AB "Drobė" became insolvent.
Drobė LT
On July 14th, 2008 UAB "Ruslana" (director Dana Vitkienė) was established. September 2008 UAB "Ruslana" became UAB "Drobė LT". It employed 400 former employees of the insolvent AB “Drobė”. The main shareholder came from Russia . Most of the production was exported. In 2009, the Russian investor lost interest in further financing the company at a loss. It was decided to file a bankruptcy declaration with the court. It became bankrupt on February 11, 2010. On May 9, 2012, the bankruptcy proceedings in the Kaunas District Court were concluded. In March 2010 the remaining 102 employees of UAB "Drobė LT" were relieved. On March 13, 2013 UAB "Drobė LT" was disbanded due to liquidation .
Drobė Co
The newly established company UAB "Tekstilės era" bought the trademark "Drobė" after the bankruptcy of AB "Drobė" and continued to use it. On December 10, 2009, UAB "Tekstilės era" became UAB "Drobė Co" (Director Vidas Vilkauskas). In 2010 it achieved a turnover of 5.5 million litas (1.5 million euros). It produces the woolen, half-woolen fabrics and the school uniforms. The main market is abroad. 95% of the production is exported to Scandinavia, Germany, Austria and Italy. In 2011 UAB "Drobė Co" had 30 employees (2014: 17 employees).
