Panemunė Bridge

The Panemunė Bridge ( lit.Panemunės tiltas ) is a bridge over the Nemunas River in Kaunas , Lithuania . It connects the districts of Žemieji Šančiai and Panemunė . The bridge is 208 meters long and has two lanes of traffic. 1200 cars cross the bridge every hour.

history

In 1812 the French army under Napoleon I built three pontoon bridges in the upper part of the Jiesia , which were protected by 68 cannons. The Imperial Russian Army built each year in the lower part of the railway tunnel Kaunas (now Švenčionių -Straße) a pontoon bridge.

In 1916 the German army set up the first wooden bridge between Panemunė and Šančiai. In 1927 the construction of a new bridge in the upper part began (50 m from the old bridge). In 1941 the Soviet Army bombed the bridge. In 1954 the Soviet organization “Mostopojezd 446” began the reconstruction work. In 1957 the bridge was built.
