Mike Posma (born December 16, 1967 in Medford , New Jersey ) is a retired American ice hockey player and coach . Among other things, he was active in the DEL for Adler Mannheim . Most recently he trained the SHC Fassa from the Italian A1 series .
Player career
Mike Posma was signed in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues in 31st position in the second round. Although a commitment in the second round of the draft almost always results in an NHL career, Posma never played in that league. Instead, he ran for four years for the university team at Western Michigan University in the NCAA . In 240 games he got 174 points scorer . For a defense attorney , this was excellent value on a university team. In 1987, he took with Team USA at the World Junior Championships in Czechoslovakia part. He scored two goals in seven games. In the 1990/91 season he ran for the only time for a game round for an American professional hockey team - the Utica Devils of a team in the American Hockey League (AHL). And here too, with 49 scorer points in 78 games, there was a very good statistical record.
In 1991 Posma moved to SC Lyss in Switzerland for one season. In 1992 he moved to HC Thurgau , in the then National League B played. He played there for five years. After a very successful season in 1996/97, he rose to the National League A and received a contract with EHC Kloten . He remained loyal to this team for 22 games and switched to the reigning German champions of the DEL , the Adler Mannheim , during the current season . In 18 games he only scored one point, but had to sit in the penalty box for 66 minutes . Although he repeated winning the German championship title with the team, he was no longer obliged due to his inexplicable lack of discipline. In the National League B he ended his active career at EHC Chur after 58 more games and again good 52 points scorer.
Coaching career
Posma's playing career went smoothly into a coaching career in Switzerland. He was initially employed as an assistant coach at EHC Chur and then at Lausanne HC , before moving to SC Langenthal , a national league B club, as head coach in 2003. In the spring of 2007 he was released due to a false start of the team in the play-offs against the GCK Lions . In Switzerland, however, there was also speculation that Posma's excessive alcohol consumption was one of the reasons for his dismissal.
In 2005, Posma came into conflict with the law. In the middle of the play-offs at the time, he ran into a police check. The police officers found that he had driven his car while drunk. He then became a coach at the top Slovenian club HDD Olimpija Ljubljana in the EBEL . However, he was fired in October 2008 after the team won only three points from eight games.
At the beginning of November 2009 he was hired as head coach by the last EBEL, HK Acroni Jesenice . In September 2010 it was announced that he was behind the gang of SHC Fassa from the Italian Serie A1 in the 2010/11 season . In December 2010, however, the American was removed from office and replaced by Miroslav Fryčer .
