Rick Lessard (born January 9, 1968 in Timmins , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . During his career he played for the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League .
Career
Lessard initially played for four years from 1984 to 1988 with the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League and earned the reputation of a strong offensive but not very dangerous defender . Nevertheless, the Calgary Flames had selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 1986 in the seventh round in 142nd position and finally equipped him with a professional contract before the 1988/89 season .
The Flames used Lessard for the time being in the International Hockey League with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles . There the rookie managed to be elected to the league's First All-Star Team straight away and was also featured in his first six NHL games for the Calgary Flames. In the following two seasons, the Canadian could no longer build on the performance of his rookie year in the IHL and was only used once for Calgary until the end of the 1990/91 season . Therefore, he went unprotected in the 1991 NHL Expansion Draft through which the newly formed San Jose Sharks could replenish their roster. They selected Lessard from among the unprotected players in Calgary, but only used him eight times during the 1991/92 season . In December 1992 he was then transferred for Robin Bawa to the Vancouver Canucks , which let him play exclusively in the minor leagues . After the 1993/94 season he ended his career after only 15 NHL appearances.
