Career
Mayer began his career in 1984 with the Penticton Knights before receiving a 1985 scholarship from the University of Denver . There he played for the hockey team in the College Football Western Collegiate Hockey Association . During the 1986 NHL Entry Draft , those in charge of the Detroit Red Wings secured the rights to the defender when they selected him in the third round in a total of 43rd position. After he finished his studies in 1988, he was then active for one season for Team Canada . In the summer of 1989 he moved to the American Hockey League for the then farm team of the Detroit Red Wings, the Adirondack Red Wings . While he still had a regular place in the team in his first season in 1989/90 in Glens Falls , he lost it in the following season and was then used in the International Hockey League with the San Diego Gulls .
After the 1991/92 season he left the Adirondack Red Wings and went back to the ice for Team Canada. As a free agent , he signed a contract with the Ottawa Senators in the course of the 1993/94 season , in which he completed 17 games and scored four points scorer. He could not get his way with the Senators. Another year followed with the Atlanta Knights from the IHL, before he forced a move to Europe in the summer of 1995 and moved to the Finnish club Tappara Tampere in the SM-liiga . After a good year in Finland, he joined the Eisbären Berlin from the German Ice Hockey League in the 1996/97 season .
With the polar bears he reached third place in the European Hockey League in 1999 . In 2001 he left the club and was then active until 2005 for EC Bad Tölz in the 2nd Bundesliga . Meyer ended his career after the 2005/06 season at SC Riessersee .

As a trainer
After the end of his active ice hockey career, he first worked as a trainer for the Eisbären Juniors Berlin before the people in charge of the Nürnberg Ice Tigers signed him from the DEL. There he had been employed as assistant coach alongside Andreas Brockmann since 2009 , took over the position of head coach on an interim basis in September 2011 after Brockmann's dismissal and was then also dismissed after a weekend. In the 2012/13 season he coached the school league team at EC Bad Tölz before moving to EC Red Bull Salzburg , where he was head coach of the junior team from the Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja League .
