Rossland is a city in Canada . It is located in the province of British Columbia in the Monashee Mountains in the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary .

history

The city got its name from the miner and gold prospector Ross Thompson, who staked a claim in 1890 at the place where the city later emerged . Originally the name of the city was supposed to be "Thompson", but due to an already existing city of the same name it was called "Rossland".

A gold rush in British Columbia in 1897 made Rossland one of the largest cities in western Canada. The granting of local self-government for the community took place on March 18, 1897 ( incorporated as City ).

From 1898 to 1901, a two-story brick building was built in Rossland as a courthouse. The Rossland Court House sits on a steep slope and was declared a National Historic Site of Canada on January 15, 1980 .

Demographics

The census in 2011 showed a population of 3,556 inhabitants for the settlement. The population of the settlement decreased by 8.5% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the province of British Columbia increased by 7.0%.
