history

The beginnings (1972 to 1982)

The Prince Albert Raiders were founded in 1972 and initially played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , a second-rate junior league, where they quickly became one of the most successful junior teams in Canadian Category II junior ice hockey. In their ten-year league membership, they won the championship eight times. From 1976 to 1982 they continuously won the Anavet Cup , a trophy given to the winner of a best-of-seven series between the champions of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. They also won the Centennial Cup for the national CJHL champions four times during this period . Because of these successes, the team moved in the course of a league expansion for the 1982/83 season in the Western Hockey League.

Western Hockey League

The Raiders have played in the WHL without interruption since the 1983/84 season. In their first year of league membership, the team still missed the play-offs and in the second season they were eliminated in the first round. But already in their third year in the WHL, the team won the President's Cup , as today's Ed Chynoweth Cup for the WHL championship was called back then, with 58 wins, eleven losses and three draws . The team then played against the winners of the Ontario Hockey League and the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec for the Memorial Cup , the most important trophy in Canadian junior ice hockey. They sat down against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds , Verdun Junior Canadiens and the Shawinigan Cataractes and also won the Memorial Cup, which is also the greatest success in the history of the franchise to date . Since 1985 some later NHL players played in the ranks of the Raiders, but they could not win another WHL championship. After winning the title, the Raiders stood as winners of the Eastern Conference twice in the WHL final, where they were defeated, however, in the 1991/92 season against the Saskatoon Blades and in the 1998/99 season against the Calgary Hitmen .
