Richard Brian Pilon (born April 30, 1968 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 646 games for the New York Islanders , New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues in the course of his active career between 1985 and 2002 National Hockey League has contested on the position of defender .
Career
Pilon spent his junior years between 1986 and 1988 with the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League . Even before his first full season, the defender was selected in the seventh round in the seventh round in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League . The 18-year-old then completed two complete years of play in the WHL and was appointed to the Second All-Star Team of the WHL Eastern Conference after the 1987/88 season .
In the summer of 1988 Pilon switched to the professional field and immediately got a regular place in the NHL squad of the Islanders, to which he belonged for the following eleven years. The defender was repeatedly thrown back from injuries during this time. In his second year as a professional, he only played 14 games due to an eye injury. He also missed large parts of the seasons between 1993 and 1996 due to injuries to his shoulder, wrist and knee. Shortly after the beginning of the 1999/2000 season , Pilon was put on the waiver list by the New York Islanders and selected from there by city rivals New York Rangers . There he was in action until the end of the 2000/01 season .
After the 2000/01 season, Pilon's contract ran out and was not renewed by the Rangers. The negotiating rights of the prospective free agent were then given to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a seven-round vote in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft . However, they did not manage to agree on a contract with the defensive player early. Instead, Pilon signed an annual deal with the St. Louis Blues . Due to a new wrist injury, he only played eight games for St. Louis before ending his career with the expiry of his contract.
