LiAngelo Robert Ball (born November 24, 1998 in Anaheim , California ) is an American basketball player. As a high school junior at Chino Hills High School in 2016, he won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) with his two brothers. He is the son of former NFL player LaVar Ball and the younger brother of current NBA player Lonzo Ball . LiAngelo Ball became known worldwide through his arrest in China and the subsequent advocacy of Donald Trump , which led to his release. The incident led to the suspension by the University of California, Los Angeles , for whose team he was originally supposed to play. He then moved to the Lithuanian club BC Vytautas .

Vita

Ball was born in Anaheim to two former college basketball players, LaVar and Tina Ball. His father, LaVar, also played professional American football for the London Monarchs in the World League of American Football .

Liangelo started playing basketball at an early age with his brothers Lonzo and LaMelo. For a long time the trio played in teams that were trained by their father.

High school career

Ball played basketball at Chino Hills High School in Chino Hills California, where he played ball with his older brother Lonzo for the first three years of high school. In his junior year he averaged 27.4 points per game and helped Chino Hills set a perfect 35-0 record that culminated in the 2016 CIF State Open Division Championship. His younger brother, newcomer LaMelo, was on the team, as was cousin Andre Ball. Ball averaged 33.8 points per game over the next year. This helped his high school team to a 30-3 record and led the team to the CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals. His senior season saw some high profile performances, including a 72-point game.

College career

Ball moved to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) after high school , where he was supposed to play for the Bruins basketball team. However, he only played one test match for the Bruins.

Club career

LiAngelo Ball and his younger brother signed a contract with the Lithuanian first division club BC Vytautas in December 2017 , where both will play from the beginning of 2018. His first competitive game took place on January 13, 2018 against Lietkabelis Panevėžys . However, he could not score a point in the loss of his team in this game. He left the team to focus on the front end of season Draft in the National Basketball Association to prepare. He joined the Los Angeles Ballers of the Junior Basketball Association that his father founded in July 2018 . He won the championship with the club and was elected MVP of the final series.

NBA

LiAngelo had hoped to be selected in the 2018 NBA draft , but no team chose him.

Since the end of 2019 Ball has been playing at Oklahoma City Blue in the NBA G-League as an intern without a contract.

Trivia

LiAngelo Ball was arrested with two others in Hangzhou in November 2017 for shoplifting sunglasses. After US President Donald Trump personally appealed to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for the release of the three arrested basketball players, they were released a few days later. After the US President complained on Twitter that the three players were not grateful to him, Ball thanked Trump. However, he was initially temporarily suspended by the coach of his team, and the university was also examining further steps, as theft violated its code of ethics . Ball left the university at the instigation of his father.

After the release, the dispute between LiAngelo's father and Donald Trump escalated in the media.
