Kenneth James Baumgartner (born March 11, 1966 in Flin Flon , Manitoba ) is a former Swiss - Canadian ice hockey player (defender / left winger) and coach who worked for the Los Angeles Kings , New York Islanders , Toronto Maple Leafs , Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Boston Bruins played in the National Hockey League .

Career

On January 4, 1988 Ken Baumgartner played as the first player with a Swiss passport to play in the National Hockey League . On March 19, 1988, he scored his first goal against the Detroit Red Wings . In total, Baumgartner played over 700 games and collected over 2000 penalty minutes. At the beginning of his professional career, the grandson of Swiss emigrants spent a season in Switzerland with the EHC Chur together with his brother Kevin ( goalkeeper ) .

Baumgartner owes his many penalty minutes to his role as enforcer . The educated banker (graduated in economics) was for a long time Vice-President of the NHLPA players' union and played a key role in the settlement of the first NHL lockout from 1994-95.

Immediately after the end of his career, the Boston Bruins took him over as an assistant coach for a season.
