Shane Willis (* 13. June 1977 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career, among other things for the Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League and the HC Davos in the Swiss National League A play Has.

Career

Willis first played from 1994 to 1997 with the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League . During the 1996/97 season he moved to league rivals Lethbridge Hurricanes . In the same year he was elected to the East First All-Star Team of the WHL and won the President's Cup with the Hurricanes . He stayed in Lethbridge the following season and found his way back to the WHL East First All-Star Team. During his time in the WHL, he was selected twice in the NHL Entry Draft . First in 1995 in the third round in 56th position by the Tampa Bay Lightning , and since they could not get him to sign the contract, in 1997 in the fourth round in 88th position by the Carolina Hurricanes .

In the fall of 1998, the winger finally switched to the Hurricanes franchise and played for their farm team , the Beast of New Haven , in the American Hockey League . His rookie year in the AHl was extremely successful. Willis received the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award and was also elected to the league's All-Rookie Team and First All-Star Team . The 1999/2000 season he spent with the Cincinnati Cyclones in the International Hockey League before he made the jump into the National Hockey League in the fall of 2000 . Willis also managed to impress there in his first season. Once again he found his way into the NHL All-Rookie Team and was named NHL Rookie of the Month in February 2001 . In March 2002, Willis' time with the Hurricanes ended when he was handed over to the Tampa Bay Lightning with Chris Dingman . In return, goalkeeper Kevin Weekes moved to Carolina. The Canadian was rarely used there. In the following three game years between 2002 and 2005 he ran for the Springfield Falcons and Hershey Bears in the AHL.

For the 2005/06 season, Willis decided to move abroad and signed a contract with HC Davos of the Swiss National League A . However, he ended the season at Linköpings HC in the Swedish Elitserien . He finally returned to North America in the summer of 2006. He completed the 2006/07 season with the Albany River Rats , the farm team of the Carolina Hurricanes, in the American Hockey League. Here, too, the attacker only stayed a year, since he switched to the Nashville Predators franchise in the summer of 2007 . For their farm team, the Milwaukee Admirals , he only played one game during the season. He spent his last season with his ex-team, the Springfield Falcons, in the AHL.

International

Willis represented his home country at the 1997 Junior World Cup in Switzerland . There the Canadian team won the gold medal with a 2-0 win over arch rivals USA . Willis was used in all seven tournament games.
