James Bettauer (born March 19, 1991 in Mississauga , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player with German nationality who has been on the ice for the Sheffield Steelers since July 2019 .
Personal
Bettauer moved from Mississauga to Port Moody , British Columbia , a suburb of Vancouver , at the age of five , where he spent his childhood and youth. His sister, who is twelve years younger than him, also plays ice hockey and also plays rings . His father owns two pet shops, he is originally from Berlin , which is why his son has German citizenship.
Career
James Bettauer began his career as a hockey player at the age of 16 with the Penticton Vees, for which he was active in the Canadian Junior League British Columbia Hockey League in the 2007/08 season . With his team he won the championship title of the BCHL straight away , among others together with the later NHL professional Zac Dalpe . After this success, the Chilliwack Bruins from the WHL signed him. However, Bettauer could not convince here. The following season he played again in the BCHL for Burnaby Express. After an increase over the previous season, he received another contract in the WHL, with the Prince Albert Raiders . In the summer of 2011, Bettauer and the Hamburg Freezers team prepared for the new season. On October 24, 2011, the Medicine Hat Tigers announced the signing of Bettauer, and striker Kellan Tochkin was transferred to the Raiders for the services of the defender . At the end of the 2011/12 season , the right-handed player had 21 goals, making the attacking player the defender with the most goals in the league.
On May 7, 2012, the Hamburg Freezers finally announced the change of the German-Canadian, where he signed a one-year contract. He scored his first goal in the German Ice Hockey League in the 3: 4 away defeat against the Nürnberg Ice Tigers . Due to a broken ankle, Bettauer had to take a break during the season. Despite this injury, the Freezers extended the defender's contract for another year.
From 2014 to 2016 Bettauer played for the Augsburger Panthers before moving to the Straubing Tigers within the DEL for the 2016/17 season. After two years in Lower Bavaria, Bettauer will switch to the Krefeld Penguins for the 2018/19 season .
Style of play
The offensive defender, who can also be used as a power forward , is described as a good skater who also has solid puck control. The sports director of Hamburg Freezers Stéphane Richer says of him: “He can be used as a defender in all situations, is very calm for his young age, has good running skills and has offensive skills. In addition, James certainly still has a lot of development potential. "
