Byron Jaromir Dafoe (born February 25, 1971 in Sussex , England ) is a former British ice hockey goalkeeper with a Canadian passport who played for the Washington Capitals , Los Angeles Kings , Boston Bruins and Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League from 1992 to 2004 played.
Career
As a junior, Dafoe from England played in the Canadian Junior League WHL with the Portland Winter Hawks . In the 1989 NHL Entry Draft he was drawn by the Washington Capitals in the second round as 35th. Within the WHL, he moved to the Prince Albert Raiders during his last season (1990/91) .
In the 1991/92 season, the Capitals mostly used him in the American Hockey League . Here he played most of the season with the Baltimore Skipjacks , where he alternated between the posts with Olaf Kölzig , among others . Just like Kölzig, Dafoe couldn't get past goalkeeper Don Beaupre during this time . He was allowed to play his first game in the 1992/93 season . Also in the next two seasons he came to isolated missions, but there were no more than 10 games in the jersey of the Capitals.
From the 1995/96 season he played for the Los Angeles Kings and shared the playing time there with the long-time goalkeeper of the Kings Kelly Hrudey , who moved to San Jose after the season and was replaced by Stéphane Fiset . After two seasons in Los Angeles, Dafoe moved to the Boston Bruins for the 1997/98 season and became the undisputed number 1. The five years in Boston were certainly the best of his career, after the 2001/02 season he moved to the Atlanta Thrashers . Here he could not really assert himself against the goalkeeper Pasi Nurminen and was temporarily thrown out of the race in his second and last season in 2003/04 due to a slight concussion . He paused the following season, which was canceled by the lockout, but did not return to the ice afterwards.
Together with Olaf Kölzig and Scott Mellanby , he founded Athletes Against Autism , an organization that advocates research into autism .
