Donald William "Don" Beaupre (born September 19, 1961 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played 739 games for the Minnesota North Stars , Washington Capitals , Ottawa Senators and Toronto in the course of his playing career between 1978 and 1997 Has played in the Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). Beaupre, who stood with the Minnesota North Stars in his rookie season in the final series of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1981 , took part in the NHL All-Star Game twice during his career .
Career
Beaupre spent his junior years between 1978 and 1980 with the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL). There the goalkeeper was number 1 between the posts in both years and completed 113 of 136 possible games in the regular season . At the end of the 1979/80 season he was elected to the First All-Star Team of the OMJHL and then in the NHL Entry Draft 1980 in the second round in 37th place - and thus the first goalkeeper of the draft ever - by the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League (NHL) selected.
The 19-year-old then took part in the North Stars training camp in the late summer of 1980 and impressed those responsible so much that at the beginning of the 1980/81 season he outpaced the experienced Gilles Meloche and Gary Edwards and guarded the goal of Minnesota in the NHL. During his rookie season , Beaupre shared the post of goalkeeper with Meloche and both led the team as an almost equal duo in the final series of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1981 , which was lost to the New York Islanders . In addition, the Canadian took part in the NHL All-Star Game during the season, where he set an NHL record as the youngest starter in the goalkeeping position. In the choice of the Calder Memorial Trophy for the best newcomer to the league of the year , he finished third behind the eventual winners Peter Šťastný and Larry Murphy . In the following seven years, Beaupre remained loyal to the North Stars and formed a goalkeeper team with Meloche until 1985, although the team did not succeed in nearly repeating the success of 1981. After Meloche's move to the Pittsburgh Penguins , the keeper shared the post in goal with Jon Casey and Kari Takko from 1985 onwards , before moving to the Washington Capitals shortly after the start of the 1988/89 season in exchange for the transfer rights to the drafted college player Claudio Scremin was delivered.
In the franchise from the US state capital, Beaupre had to be content with third place in the goalkeeper rotation behind the established Clint Malarchuk and Pete Peeters and the arduous route via the Baltimore Skipjacks farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), so that he in Over the course of the season, the Caps guarded the goal only eleven times . It was not until the following game year, after Malarchuk had left the club as a free agent via transfer and Peeters , that the now 28-year-old took over the position of goalkeeper at the capital city, which he held until the end of the 1993/94 season . Meanwhile, Mike Liut , Jim Hrivnak and Rick Tabaracci served as his back-ups . Beaupre had his best years in the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons , when he set up interim franchise records for the lowest average goal conceded , the highest catch rate , the most victories of the season, played season games and played minutes. In addition, he was league leader in 1991 with five achieved shutouts and took part in 1992 for the second time in his career in the NHL All-Star Game .
Before the start of the 1994/95 season , which began late due to the lockout , the goalkeeper was given in a transfer to the Ottawa Senators in January 1995 , which he moved from the US to the Canadian capital. At the time of the move, Beaupre held numerous other franchise records, including most games, wins, and total shutouts. The Senators only gave their future goalkeeper a five-round vote in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft . Beaupre only stayed a good year with the Sens , who were the worst of all 26 NHL franchises in both game years between 1994 and 1996. In the 1995/96 season he was part of a five-player transfer business in which he was given to the New York Islanders together with Martin Straka and Bryan Berard . In return, the Islanders sent Wade Redden and Damian Rhodes , his successor in the gate, to Ottawa. To complete the previous transfer of New York with the Toronto Maple Leafs , in which they had received Rhodes and Ken Belanger , Beaupre was sent to Toronto with Kirk Muller on the same day . In the rest of the season and at the beginning of the following year, however, he came there only to 13 missions because he could not prevail against Félix Potvin . Ultimately, he found himself on the farm team St. John's Maple Leafs in the AHL and also - towards the end of the season - also played a few games for the Utah Grizzlies in the International Hockey League (IHL). With no prospect of a contract offer from the NHL, Beaupre finally ended his active career after the end of the season at the age of 35, in which he stood 739 times in the NHL between the posts.
International
Although not eligible to play as a Canadian citizen, Beaupre took part in the training camp of the US team in the run-up to the 1981 Canada Cup . He was not nominated due to the lack of eligibility to play. The goalkeeper also did not play any international matches for his home country Canada.
