Career

His active career was short-lived. Clouston played on the University of Alberta ice hockey team at the CWUAA from 1989 to 1993 , where he earned his bachelor's degree. However, he then did not pursue a career as a professional and began working as a trainer. During the 1994/95 season he was assistant coach with the Powell River Paper Kings in the British Columbia Hockey League . He then became trainer and general manager of the Grande Prairie Storm in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . In 1996, Clouston was voted Trainer of the Year in the AJHL. From 1999 to 2002 he was assistant coach for the Kootenay Ice in the Western Hockey League under Ryan McGill . For the 2002/03 season, Clouston was appointed head coach of the team. In the following five seasons, the Kootenay Ice always ended the season with a positive balance sheet, but in the playoffs it was at the latest in the third round. In 2005 and 2007 he was awarded the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as Coach of the Year of the Western Hockey League. In 2005 he was also honored with the Brian Kilrea Coach of the Year Award .

At the 2005 U18 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship , Clouston acted as assistant coach for the Canadian team. For the 2007/08 season he moved to the Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League , where he was again head coach. In its debut season, the playoffs were missed. He did not finish the following season at Binghamton. On February 2, 2009, he was named head coach of the Ottawa Senators as the successor to the sacked Craig Hartsburg . In the 2009/10 season he led the Senators into the playoffs, in which the team failed in the first round against the Pittsburgh Penguins . In the following season, however, the playoffs were clearly missed and a few hours after the last lost encounter against the Boston Bruins , Clouston was sacked in Ottawa. In August 2011, Clouston was introduced as the head coach of the Brandon Wheat Kings from the WHL. He held this position until the end of the 2011/12 season.

In June 2013, Clouston was hired by the Prince Albert Raiders as head coach. In January 2016, he succeeded the dismissed Niklas Sundblad as the new head coach of the Kölner Haien from the German Ice Hockey League and led the team through the pre-playoffs to the semi-finals. There the Haie were eliminated against Munich. He was then given a new contract for the 2016/17 season. In January 2017, his contract with the sharks was extended to 2019. In November 2017, Clouston was fired due to persistent failure.
