Niklas Sundblad (born January 3, 1973 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach who has been the head coach of the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the DEL since December 2019 . Before that he won the German championship with ERC Ingolstadt in the 2013/14 season . He was the first in DEL history to become German champions both as a player (2002) and as a coach (2014).

Career

Player (1989-2008)

Niklas Sundblad began his career as a hockey player in the youth of AIK Solna , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Elitserien in the 1990/91 season . In his rookie year he scored a total of four scorer points in 39 games, including one goal. Then the elected him Calgary Flames in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as a total of 19 players. After spending two more years at AIK, the attacker played for Calgary's farm team from the American Hockey League , the Saint John Flames, from 1993 to 1996 . In addition, he completed two games for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League in the 1995/96 season , in which he remained free of points and punishment. After three years in North America, the right-shooter returned to Europe, where he received a contract with TPS Turku in the Finnish SM-liiga . With the Finns he won the European Hockey League in the 1996/97 season and was runner-up with his team in the same season.

From 1998 to 2000 Sundblad played again in his Swedish homeland with the Malmö Redhawks before he was signed by the Düsseldorfer EG , for which he scored a total of 44 scorer points, including 22 goals, in 59 games in his first DEL season. After the season he moved to Düsseldorf's Rhenish rival Kölner Haie , with whom he became German champion in the 2001/02 season . The former Swedish international stayed in Cologne for another season before playing in the Elitserien for one season for his ex-club Malmö Redhawks. After just one year, the winger returned to Germany in 2004, where he was promoted to the DEL in the 2004/05 season with the Duisburger Füchsen , in which he was on the ice for Duisburg for another year before he was on the ice from 2006 to 2008 the HC Alleghe in the Italian Serie A aground. In the 2007/08 season, the Swede also scored two points in ten games, including one goal, for Nippon Paper Cranes in the East Asian professional league, the Asia League Ice Hockey . He began the 2008/09 season at his home club AIK Solna, which had since been relegated to HockeyAllsvenskan .

Trainer (since 2008)

A short time later he left the club and ended his active ice hockey career in order to then sign a contract as head coach with the Herner EV team . He left this on December 2, 2009 to work under the Italo-Canadian Bill Stewart as an assistant coach for his ex-club Kölner Haie. After his release on November 6, 2010 Sundblad took over the position of head coach until the end of the season. For the 2011/12 season he was made assistant coach again for the Haien after they had signed Uwe Krupp as their new head coach. In the 2013/14 season he was head coach of the ERC Ingolstadt and led Bayern to their first German championship , but left the club afterwards.

In October 2014 Sundblad succeeded the dismissed Uwe Krupp and was again head coach at the Haien. In January 2016, the Swede was fired because of continued unsuccessfulness.

In January 2017 he was hired by Örebro HK from Svenska Hockeyligan as head coach. On December 4, 2018, he was released from Örebro HK and introduced as the new head coach of Schwenninger Wild Wings on December 16, 2019 .

International

For Sweden Sundblad took part in the Junior World Championships in 1992 and 1993 and the 1997 World Cup.
