Kyle Sonnenburg (born May 7, 1986 in Waterloo , Ontario ) is a German - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Schwenninger Wild Wings from the German Ice Hockey League since September 2019 .

Career

Sonnenburg began his career with the Belleville Bulls , for which was on the ice between 2002 and 2005 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League and then moved within the league to the Brampton Battalion . There he appeared in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons for the first time through an offensive game and marked 23 and 41 scorer points respectively. Starting in 2007, the defender played for the University of Waterloo university team in Canadian Interuniversity Sport and was named Defender of the Year in the West Division in 2010 and 2011 .

In the summer of 2011, Sonnenburg decided to move to Europe and first signed a trial contract ( try-out ) with the Krefeld Penguins from the German Ice Hockey League . There the left shooter was able to recommend himself in preparation for the season and received German citizenship because of his emigrated ancestors, so that he was firmly committed in September 2011 and from then on no longer fell under the foreigner quota in the DEL. Due to the strained personnel situation at the Seidenstadt team due to injury, the German-Canadian was initially used in the storm before he was also injured in early 2012 and was out until the end of the season. In April 2012 he received a one-year contract extension and completed a total of 51 games in the following season 2012/13 , in which he collected eight scorer points and filled the more defensive part in the defender pairing with Josh Meyers . In the 2013/14 season , Sonnenburg initially played 24 games for the Penguins before he suffered a concussion in a game against the Hamburg Freezers in a fist fight with David Wolf in December 2013 and again suffered an early season off. In the following year, the defender was finally able to establish himself in the back team of Krefeld and developed into a solid performer, whereupon his contract was extended for two more years in March 2015.

After six years in Krefeld, he left the club after the 2016/17 season and moved within the DEL to the Schwenninger Wild Wings , where he was under contract until the end of the 2018/19 season. After the end of the season he was without a club. After the second matchday in the 2019/20 DEL season, the Schwenninger Wild Wings announced that he would return to the team. He was initially given a try-out contract and will wear the number 7.
