Petri Liimatainen (born July 20, 1969 in Hässelby ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach.

Active career

Petri Liimatainen began his career as a hockey player in the youth of AIK Ishockey , for whose professional team he was active from 1986 to 1993 in the Elitserien and Division 1 . He then moved to the Malmö Redhawks , with whom he was Swedish champion in the 1993/94 season . After two years in Malmö, the defender joined the German Ice Hockey League in 1995 , where he stood on the ice for the Krefeld Penguins for the next four seasons . After a year in the Swiss National League A , the left-handed shooter returned to the DEL in 2000, where he played for the Berlin Capitals and the Kölner Haie for one season, winning the German championship with the Rhinelander .

After winning the title, Liimatainen returned to his ex-club Malmö Redhawks, for which he spent two seasons in the Elitserien as well as for their league rivals Södertälje SK . In the 2006/07 season, the Swede played for HC Lugano and EHC Basel in the Swiss National League A . After the 1992 Olympian started the 2008/09 season at Linköpings HC , for which he was on the ice in a game of the Champions Hockey League , he moved to the EHC Linz in the Austrian Ice Hockey League . The 2009/10 season Liimatainen played for the Danish first division club Hvidovre before ending his active career.

International

For Sweden Liimatainen took part in the U20 Junior World Championships in 1988 and 1989 , as well as the 1992 World Cup. Furthermore, he was in Sweden's squad at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville .

Coaching career

Liimatainen worked at the beginning of the 2010/11 season at Hvidovre , for which he was most recently active as a player. During the season, however, he moved to his ex-club, the Kölner Haien . In the 2011/12 season he was assistant coach at IK Pantern and in the 2013/14 season under Niklas Sundblad at ERC Ingolstadt . With Ingolstadt he won the German championship title in 2014. In the 2015/16 season he was again assistant coach of the Kölner Haie under Sundblad. On January 20, 2016, he and Sundblad were released in Cologne. On January 5, 2017, Liimatainen became Sundblad's assistant coach at the Swedish first division club Örebro HK .
