Shawn Stephen Anderson (born February 7, 1968 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who has spent eight seasons in the National Hockey League and seven in the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
Anderson first played in his home country in the Quebec Amateur Athletic Association for the Lac St Louis Lions . After six months at the University of Maine , he joined Team Canada around Christmas 1985 and played in the Spengler Cup . He was then selected in the first round in fifth place in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft . The Buffalo Sabers preferred Anderson to the future Hockey Hall of Fame member Brian Leetch .
He played in the National Hockey League for the first time in the 1986/87 season , but was also sent to the farm team , the Rochester Americans . He was active for these two teams until 1990 before he was transferred to the Washington Capitals in exchange with Bill Houlder . However, they put him on the waiver list from which the Québec Nordiques signed him . The left shooter finally played the season for the Nordiques and their farm team, the Halifax Citadels . He then spent the 1991/92 season in Germany at ES Weißwasser . In the run-up to the season he was sent to the Winnipeg Jets , which a few days later passed him on to the Washington Capitals. From 1992 to 1994, the defender played for the Capitals in the NHL and in the American Hockey League for the Baltimore Skipjacks . In August 1994 he signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers , for which he completed a game and played the season mainly for the Hershey Bears in the AHL. The 1995/96 season he spent in the International Hockey League with the Milwaukee Admirals .
After two more positions in the IHL in the following year, he moved to Europe again . Here Anderson played in eight games in the German Ice Hockey League for the Wedemark Scorpions . The 1997/98 season he played for the Revierlöwen Oberhausen before he joined the EC KAC in Austria for the next season . After another six games in the IHL, the third move to Germany took place in the 1999/2000 season , this time to the Augsburg Panthers . In the 2000/01 game he ran for the newly promoted DEL Iserlohn Roosters , in which the defender advanced to the top scorer. From 2001 to 2003 he then played for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers . His last stop was the Augsburg Panthers, to which he returned. He then ended his professional ice hockey career.
