Robert Freeman "Bob" Corkum (born December 18, 1967 in Salisbury , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach , who played 782 games for the Buffalo Sabers and Mighty Ducks in the course of his active career between 1989 and 2002 of Anaheim , Philadelphia Flyers , Phoenix Coyotes , Los Angeles Kings , New jersey Devils and Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League on the position of the center has denied. Corkum has been the head coach of the United States women's national ice hockey team since October 2018 , after serving as assistant coach for the New York Islanders from 2014 to 2017 .
Career
Bob Corkum began his career as a hockey player in the 1985/86 season at the University of Maine , where he played 39 games and reached 33 points. During the NHL Entry Draft 1986 he was selected in the third round at a total of 47th position by the Buffalo Sabers . Corkum played until 1989 at the University of Maine, where he completed a total of 159 games and scored 142 points. The attacker was included in the team of the Buffalo Sabers for the 1989/90 season , but only played eight NHL games there before he was transferred to their farm team at the time , the Rochester Americans . By 1992 Corkum ran mostly on the farm team, but also received a few appearances in the NHL. For the 1992/93 season , the Sabers finally took him into their squad. The attacker played 68 games and scored ten points for the Sabers. In the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft , the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim chose the attacker, to whom he switched to the 1993/94 season. Corkum had the best season of his career. With the Ducks he received 76 appearances and collected 51 points scorer. In the following two years his performance decreased and he reached only 19 and twelve points respectively.
In February 1996, the Mighty Ducks transferred him to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Chris Herperger and a draft pick . With the Flyers he completed 28 games and reached seven points. At the end of September 1996, the Flyers put the attacker on the waiver list, from which the Phoenix Coyotes selected him in the Waiver Draft . In Phoenix he ran on the following three seasons as a regular player. In 233 games for the Coyotes, he scored 60 points scorer. After his expiring contract at the end of the 1998/99 season was not renewed, he remained a so-called free agent for several months before the striker signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings in late December 1999 . In 103 games for the Kings he got 21 points. In February 2001, the Kings transferred him to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Steve Kelly . With the Devils, Corkum received 29 appearances and reached seven points before his contract was not renewed at the end of the season and he was thus a free player again. The American signed with the Atlanta Thrashers . He scored seven points in 65 games. In March 2002, the Thrashers gave him a draft pick to the Buffalo Sabers, with whom Bob Corkum had started his NHL career. After ten games and only one point, Corkum ended his active career at the end of the 2001/02 season .
After a break of several years, Corkum began to work as an assistant coach at his alma mater , the University of Maine, at the beginning of the 2008/09 season . He worked there for a total of five years before he was hired by the New York Islanders from the NHL - again as an assistant coach. He was under contract with the Islanders for four years until the summer of 2017. Since October 2018, Corkum has been the head coach of the United States women's national ice hockey team , which he led to winning the gold medal at the 2019 World Cup .
International
At the international level, Corkum represented his home country at the 1987 Junior World Championships in Austria . The team ended up in fourth place in the final standings and narrowly missed the medal ranks. Corkum was able to score four goals in seven tournament games.
