The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1977 began on April 5, 1977 and ended on May 14, 1977 with the 4-0 success of the Canadiens de Montréal over the Boston Bruins . The Canadiens thus won their second Stanley Cup in a row and the 20th in their franchise history . Furthermore, they found in the person of Guy Lafleur both the best scorer and the with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of this post-season . After Montréal had already been successful last year 4-0 (against Philadelphia ), the team succeeded in the second sweep in a row, which had only happened two more times in league history: Toronto in 1948 and 1949 and Montréal itself in 1968 and 1969. After Until today (as of: Playoffs 2020) they only managed to do this with the New York Islanders , 1982 and 1983 . The defeated Bruins, however, had to accept the ninth defeat in their 14th final.

Meanwhile, both the Detroit Red Wings and the California Golden Seals / Cleveland Barons franchise missed the playoffs for the seventh time in a row, making the second-longest negative series of its kind in NHL history at the time.

mode

The twelve teams qualified for the playoffs were placed on the seeding list according to their performance in the regular season (most points; most wins in the event of a tie). However, the four division winners were set by bye for the quarter-finals, while the remaining eight participants played a preliminary round. In all rounds, the pairings were determined by the seeding list, so the highest seeded team met the lowest seeded team, number two met the penultimate team, etc.

The series of the preliminary round were played in the best-of-three mode, the series in all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needed four wins to progress from the quarter-finals; only two in the first round. The higher-ranked team had - from the second round - home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In the preliminary round, however, the home law changed from game to game.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
