Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Korab (born September 15, 1948 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender played over 1,000 games in the National Hockey League between 1970 and 1985 , most of them for the Buffalo Sabers , and took part in two NHL All-Star Games .
Career
Beginnings
Jerry Korab spent his junior career with the St. Catharines Black Hawks in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), the highest junior division in his home province. After two years in the OHA, he made the leap into the professional field by joining the Port Huron Flags of the International Hockey League . There the defender scored 64 points in 71 games before moving to the Portland Buckaroos in the Western Hockey League the following season. The Buckaroos acted as the farm team of the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League (NHL), similar to how the St. Catharines Black Hawks were associated with the NHL team, so that the Canadian made his debut in the top division of North America in late November 1970. As a rookie , he promptly reached the Stanley Cup final with Chicago in 1971 , but lost there with the team to the Canadiens de Montréal 3: 4.
NHL
As a result, Korab established himself as an NHL defender, his stature and his physically stressed game earned him the nickname "King Kong". With the Black Hawks he was back in 1973 in the final of the Stanley Cup, in which, however, the Canadiens de Montréal prevailed again (4: 2). Just four days after the final defeat, he and Gary Smith were handed over to the Vancouver Canucks , who in return sent Dale Tallon to Chicago. The Canucks sent the defender to the Buffalo Sabers after just under six months and received John Gould and Tracy Pratt in return .
With the Sabers Korab increased his offensive performance significantly, so he achieved in the season 1974/75 with 56 points in 79 games his career best. In the same year he reached his third and last Stanley Cup final , which he also lost; the Philadelphia Flyers prevailed 4-2. He also represented Buffalo at the NHL All-Star Games in 1975 and 1976 . After more than six years on the team, he was given to the Los Angeles Kings in March 1980 in exchange for a first-round vote in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft . At this point in time, no defender wearing the Sabers jersey had played more games (464) or scored more points (265) than Korab.
He then spent three more seasons in Los Angeles before ending his career in 1983. However, two months after the start of the 1983/84 season, he was given the opportunity to return to the Sabers as a free agent , which he subsequently used. After the season he joined the Minnesota North Stars in the same way , but the Sabers signed him again in October 1984, via the waiver . After the defender had spent the 1984/85 season in Buffalo, he finally declared his active career over. In total, he had played 1072 NHL games and scored 481 points scorer.
After his active career, Korab ran a packaging company and temporarily worked as a trainer in high school .
