Gary Otto Dornhoefer (born February 2, 1943 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played in his active time from 1961 to 1978 for the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League .

Gary Dornhoefer began his career as a hockey player with the Niagara Falls Flyers, for which he was active from 1961 to 1963 in the Canadian junior league Ontario Hockey Association . Subsequently, the winger was under contract from 1963 to 1967 with the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League , in which, however, he was never able to prevail permanently. Instead, he was mainly used in the minor leagues during this period . There he played for the Minneapolis Bruins from the Central Professional Hockey League , the San Francisco Seals from the Western Hockey League and the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League . With the Hershey Bears he even spent the entire 1966/67 season in the AHL. In the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft , the Canadian was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers . In the newly formed franchise , he was one of the leading players for the next eleven years and was invited in 1973 and 1977 to take part in the NHL All-Star Game . After the 1977/78 season he ended his career with the Flyers at the age of 35.

From 1978 to 1986 Dornhoefer was a commentator for Hockey Night in Canada . He also regularly commented on games of the Philadelphia Flyers.
