William Gregory "Greg" Malone (born March 8, 1956 in Chatham , New Brunswick ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and scout , who played 724 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Hartford Whalers and Nordiques in the course of his active career between 1973 and 1987 de Québec has played in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . He then worked for 25 years as a scout for his former club in Pittsburgh and the Phoenix Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL.

Career

Malone spent his junior years after graduating from high school in Fredericton from the 1973/74 season with the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey Association or Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . There the attacker played for the team for three years before he was 19th in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft in the second round of the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League and in the seventh round of the 1976 WHA Amateur Draft Selected at 76th position by the Indianapolis Racers from the World Hockey Association competing with the NHL .

The talented offensive player then immediately moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, where he was an integral part of the squad for the following seven seasons. With the exception of two seasons - including his rookie year  - he always reached the 50 scorer point mark . Nevertheless, the Penguins parted ways in September 1983 shortly before the start of the season from their playmaker, who had been noticed in the previous two game years due to deficits on the defensive, and transferred him to the Hartford Whalers in exchange for a five-round vote in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft . There the Canadian's game became more balanced again, but with two seasons over 50 points he remained productive on the offensive. During his third year with the Whalers, another transfer took place in January 1986. He moved to the Nordiques de Québec , who received Wayne Babych in return . Malone finished the season with the Canadians before he was deported to the farm team Fredericton Express in the American Hockey League after the beginning of the 1986/87 season . After the season, he ended his active career at the age of 31.

As a result, Malone began working as a scout . From the season 1988/89 he worked for his ex-team in Pittsburgh as an amateur scout. At the beginning of the following year he was promoted to director of the scouting department and won the Stanley Cup with the pens in 1991 and 1992 . The post of scouting director occupied Malone in this form until the 2006/07 season , when he joined the scouting of league rivals Phoenix Coyotes . There he brought his experience to professional scouting until summer 2009. He then worked as a scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2009 to 2013 , where he was head of professional scouting .
