Heidi Cullen (2009)

Heidi Cullen (* 1971 in Staten Island , New York City ) is an American climate researcher. She is the scientific director of the environmental organization Climate Central in Princeton and works as a visiting professor at the nearby Princeton University . The author of the book The Weather of the Future was the first expert on climate change for the US broadcaster The Weather Channel .

Live and act

Heidi Cullen graduated with a bachelor's degree in production engineering and process research from Columbia University in New York, from whose Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory she then received her doctorate in climatology and atmospheric science .

After completing her training, Heidi Cullen initially worked at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, which deals with research into the earth's atmosphere. A two-year scholarship from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) brought her back to Columbia University, more precisely to its climate research department, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society. With her research, Cullen contributed to a project there that examined the effects of the climate on water resources in Brazil and Uruguay.

After the scholarship expired, Cullen hired the US broadcaster The Weather Channel as the first climate expert and launched a weekly program dealing with environmental and climate issues. In October 2006, the first episode of their half-hour show The Climate Code aired . A few months later, in April 2007, the format was extended to one hour of broadcasting time and renamed Forecast Earth . Heidi Cullen was also involved in the development of both programs. Forecast Earth ran on NBC, the parent company of the Weather Channel, which canceled the program in November 2008.

After leaving the Weather Channel, Heidi Cullen became the lead climatologist at the environmental organization Climate Central, where she develops studies on climate issues. One topic in Cullen's research is the connection between weather phenomena and climate change. Together with her team, for example, she calculates how strongly human behavior is partly responsible for a certain event such as Hurricane Harvey .

She is also a visiting professor at Princeton University and a research fellow at the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania . In 2010 she published her book The Weather of the Future. In it, she uses the climate forecast models of the time and shows how places such as New York , the Central Valley in California or Greenland will look like in 2050.

Cullen served as Senior Scientific Advisor on the Emmy Award- winning TV series Years of Living Dangerously (2014-2016).
