Years of Living Dangerously is an American documentary series on the US broadcaster Showtime about the climate crisis . The first episode aired on April 13, 2014 and was made available as an online stream a few days earlier.

Executive producers of the series include James Cameron , Jerry Weintraub and Arnold Schwarzenegger . The episodes show famous Hollywood actors who, as so-called "correspondents" in the USA and around the world, report on the causes and consequences of global warming . They talk to both experts (climate researchers) and normal citizens who are already affected by the effects of the climate crisis. Correspondents include Harrison Ford , Matt Damon , Jessica Alba , Don Cheadle , America Ferrera , Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lesley Stahl , Mark Bittman , Ian Somerhalder , Olivia Munn, and Michael C. Hall . Numerous internationally recognized climate researchers work as scientific advisors to the series, including Joseph Romm and Heidi Cullen as "chief science advisors" as well as Michael Oppenheimer , James E. Hansen , the former head of the NASA Goddard Institute for space studies Michael E. Mann , whose well-known “ Hockey stick curve ” is one of the basics of climate research, and more. Well-known environmental activists such as the primate researcher Jane Goodall and the managing director of Greenpeace international Kumi Naidoo are also advising the series.

Commenting on his motivations for being on the series, producer and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “I think the environmental movement can only be successful if we are simple and clear [in what we say] and make it a human story. Scientists would never get the attention like someone from show business. "

Episodes

In episode 1, Don Cheadle, Harrison Ford and Thomas L. Friedman take turns reporting from different parts of the world. Cheadle visits Plainview, Texas, which has been particularly hard hit by the extreme drought in the American Southwest (2010-2013) . There he meets the climate researcher and devout Christian Katharine Hayhoe , who reports in Christian communities on the connections between extreme weather events and climate changes. Ford visits peat forests and palm oil plantations in Indonesia to see the accelerating destruction of these natural carbon sinks. Friedman examines the possible connections between a " mega-drought " in Syria and the civil war that began shortly afterwards .
