Garry Robert Charles Howatt (born September 26, 1952 in Grand Center , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 807 games for the New York Islanders , Hartford Whalers and New Jersey Devils in the course of his active career between 1971 and 1984 National Hockey League on the position of the left winger . Howatt celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the New York Islanders, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1980 and 1981 . Howatt embodied the Enforcer type of player .
Career
Howatt began his junior career in the 1970/71 season with the Kamloops Rockets in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League . Then the striker moved to the Western Canada Hockey League , where he was initially active in the 1971/72 season for the Victoria Cougars and was transferred to league rivals Flin Flon Bombers during the season . After his first year in the WCHL Howatt was selected in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft in the tenth round in 144th place by the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League .
Already for the upcoming season 1972/73 the striker switched to the professional camp and spent his first year mainly with New York's farm team in the American Hockey League , the New Haven Nighthawks . During the season, however, he was so convincing that he made his debut for the Islanders in the NHL and played eight games there. With the beginning of the 1973/74 game year , the Canadian finally belonged to the regular squad of the NHL club, where he was mostly used in the third and fourth row. With his playing style as an enforcer , he was responsible for bringing the necessary toughness and aggressiveness into the game, while the top players Mike Bossy , Bryan Trottier , Denis Potvin and Clark Gillies were responsible for the goals. Howatt spent a total of eight seasons in the emerging franchise of the Islanders and was thus also part of the teams that won the Stanley Cup in 1980 and 1981 .
As a result of the second Stanley Cup win, Howatt was given in October 1981 in exchange for a five-round vote in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft to the Hartford Whalers . At the Whalers, Howatt let his qualities from the junior area flash again and collected 50 points scorer , which was a career high. Although Hartford promised the offensive player a long-term commitment, he obtained a new transfer and so he was transferred to the New Jersey Devils after only twelve months with the Whalers with Rick Meagher . As compensation, Hartford received Merlin Malinowski and the transfer rights to the 19-year-old young talent Scott Fusco .
The move to New Jersey didn't pay off for Howatt, however. Instead of building on his year in Hartford, he played only a subordinate role with the Devils and completed only 44 NHL games over a period of two years. In addition, he also played games for the Wichita Wind in the Central Hockey League and the Maine Mariners in the AHL. After he had won the Calder Cup at the end of the 1983/84 season with the Mariners - with the exception of six games for New Jersey - with whom he had won the Calder Cup , he retired shortly before his 32nd birthday in the summer of 1984 active professional sport back.
