An Ba-ul (born March 25, 1994 in Anyang ) is a South Korean judoka . He was Olympic runner-up in 2016 and world champion in 2015 in the half-light weight category, up to 66 kilograms.
Athletic career
The 1.69 m tall An Ba-ul fought as a junior in the ultralight. He was runner-up in the 2011 U20 World Championships and won the 2013 U21 World Championships.
From 2014 An Ba-ul fought at half light weight. In May 2015 he won the silver medal at the Asian Championships behind the Japanese Tomofumi Takajo . At the Universiade in Gwangju , a month and a half after the Asian Championships, he won the final against the Frenchman Alexandre Mariac . At the end of August 2015, the World Championships took place in Astana . On Ba-ul defeated the Uzbek Rishod Sobirov in the quarter-finals and the Israeli Golan Pollack in the semi-finals . With his final victory over the Russian Mikhail Puljajew , the South Korean was world champion. Two months after the World Championships, he won his first Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , An Ba-ul won the quarter-finals against Rishod Sobirov through waza-ari. In the semifinals he defeated the Japanese Masashi Ebinuma with a golden score after 49 seconds of extra time. The Italian Fabio Basile won the final after 1:24 minutes, An Ba-ul received the silver medal.
In May 2017, An Ba-ul won the final of the Asian Championships in Hong Kong against Yeldos Zhumakanov from Kazakhstan . An Ba-ul successfully defended his 2015 title at the Universiade in Taipei in mid-August. One week after the Universiade, the World Championships were held in Budapest . After defeats in the quarter-finals against the Georgian Wascha Margwelaschwili and in the hope round against the Ukrainian Heorhij Santaraja , the South Korean finished seventh. In February 2018, An Ba-ul won the Grand Slam tournament in Paris. At the end of August, he won the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta by beating the Japanese Joshiro Maruyama in the final . One month after the Asian Games, he defeated the Russian Mikhail Puljajew in the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Baku . In the semifinals he was defeated by the Japanese Hifumi Abe . An Ba-ul won a bronze medal by beating the Brazilian Daniel Cargnin in the hope round .
