Yuri Alexeyevich Sokolov

Yuri Alexejewitsch Sokolow ( Russian Соколов, Юрий Алексеевич ; born February 23, 1961 in Leningrad ; † March 14, 1990 ibid) was a Soviet judoka . In 1985 he was world champion, in 1986 European champion and in 1987 world championship runner-up in the semi-light weight category, up to 65 kilograms.

Athletic career

Yuri Sokolow was 1978 European Cadet Champion in the weight class up to 53 kilograms and in 1979 second in the Junior European Championships in the weight class up to 60 kilograms. In 1983 he won the Spartakiad , now starting at half-light weight , which was designed as an international pre-Olympic tournament; however, all medals went to Soviet judoka. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles took account of the Olympic boycott any athletes from the Soviet Union in part.

At the European Championships in Hamar in 1985, Sokolow was defeated in the quarter-finals by the French Marc Alexandre . Through the round of hope he reached the battle for bronze, which he lost to Andreas Paluschek from the GDR. The 1.72 m tall Yuri Sokolow won his only Soviet championship title in 1985. At the World Championships in Seoul , he defeated the Italian Sandro Rosati in the quarter -finals, the Poland Janusz Pawłowski in the semifinals and the South Korean Lee Kyung-keun in the final . In May 1986 the European Championships 1986 took place in Belgrade . Sokolow won in the semifinals against Andreas Paluschek from the GDR and in the final against Joachim Brenner from the Federal Republic of Germany. At the Goodwill Games in 1986 in Moscow, Sokolow reached the final in the weight class up to 71 kilograms and then lost to his compatriot Igor Shkarin . In November 1986 he reached the final in the 65 kilogram weight class at the Jigoro Kano Cup and was defeated by the Japanese Yosuke Yamamoto .

At the European Championships in Paris in 1987 , Sokolow again competed in the weight class up to 71 kilograms and lost the battle for bronze against Sven Loll from the GDR. At the world championships in Essen Sokolow fought again in the weight class up to 65 kilograms. In the quarterfinals he defeated the Frenchman Jean-Pierre Hansen and in the semifinals the Taiwanese Lin Shyh-Ming . In the final he met Yōsuke Yamamoto and lost as in the Jigoro Kano Cup last year. In 1988 Sokolow competed at the Olympic Games in Seoul in the weight class up to 65 kilograms. He lost his opening match against the Frenchman Bruno Carabetta with a great score (waza-ari).
