Janusz Pawłowski
Janusz Pawłowski (born July 20, 1959 in Sopot ) is a former Polish judoka . The 1.65 m tall Pole competed in the half-light weight (up to 65 kg) and won two Olympic medals in this weight class.
Athletic career
Pawłowski had already been third in the Polish championships in 1977 and 1978, and in 1979 he won his first of a total of six national championship titles. At the Judo World Championships in Paris in 1979 he was defeated in the quarterfinals against the Soviet judoka Nikolai Soloduchin , after victories against the Hungarian Csaba Radnai and the Romanian Constantin Niculae , he received the bronze medal. 1980 Pawłowski finished fifth at the European Championships. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow he reached the semifinals with three wins, where he was defeated by the Mongolian Tsendiin Damdin . In the battle for the bronze medal, Pawłowski defeated the French Yves Delvingt .
At the European Championships in 1982 Pawłowski lost to the French Thierry Rey in the round of 16 , but then won the bronze medal with three wins. A year later he lost to Jaroslaw Kříž from Czechoslovakia at the European Championships and then fought his way up to the bronze medal again. At the Judo World Championships in Moscow in 1983 he reached the semifinals and lost there against Soloduchin. He won the battle for bronze against the Austrian Josef Reiter . In 1984 Pawłowski finished fifth at the European Championships , he missed the 1984 Olympic Games because of the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries. At the Judo World Championships in 1985 in Seoul, he finished fifth.
In 1986 Janusz Pawłowski won his third bronze medal at the European Championships after only losing to the West German Joachim Brenner . In 1987 he finished fifth at the European Championships . At the Judo World Championships in 1987 in Essen, he lost to Yuri Sokolow from the Soviet Union and won the following fights; after 1979 and 1983 this was his third bronze medal at world championships.
After an Olympic bronze medal and three bronze medals each at world and European championships, Janusz Pawłowski reached the final of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with five wins , in the semifinals he won with Ippon against the Japanese Yosuke Yamamoto . He lost the final to Lee Kyung-keun from the host country.
