Ilijan Nedkow
Ilijan Nedkow ( Bulgarian Илиян Недков ; born March 18, 1958 ) is a former Bulgarian judoka . He won a bronze medal each at the Olympic Games and at European Championships.
Athletic career
The 1.74 m tall Bulgarian competed in half-light weight (up to 65 kg) until 1980 and in lightweight (up to 71 kg) from 1981.
His first major international tournament was the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . He defeated Jimmy Arevalo from Ecuador and José Antonio Branco from Portugal in the first two rounds . In the quarter-finals he met Nikolai Soloduchin from the team of the host country and lost with a Yuko rating. In the hope round he won first against Jaroslaw Kříž from Czechoslovakia and then against Torsten Reissmann from the GDR, so that he received the bronze medal in the half-light weight.
At the European Championships in Debrecen in 1981 , Nedkow won a bronze medal in the lightweight. Two years later, Nedkow defeated his first three opponents at the 1983 World Championships in Moscow , but lost in the semifinals to the Italian Ezio Gamba and then lost the battle for bronze against Steffen Stranz from Germany. He also took fifth place in 1984 in the competitions of the Socialist States, a replacement event for the athletes who were not allowed to take part in the 1984 Olympic Games because of the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries . Nedkov's last international success was the silver medal at the 1984 Student World Championships.
