Yōsuke Yamamoto

Yōsuke Yamamoto ( Japanese 山 本 洋 祐 , Yamamoto Yōsuke ; born June 22, 1960 in Kumamoto Prefecture ) is a former Japanese judoka . In 1987 he was world champion in the half-light weight category, up to 65 kilograms.

Athletic career

The 1.68 m tall Yamamoto won the Tournoi de Paris in 1984 . At the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, he won the silver medal behind South Korean Lee Kyung-keun . The following year he defeated the Hungarian Tamás Bujkó in the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Essen . In the semi-finals he defeated the Australian Warren Rosser . Yamamoto won the world title by winning the final over Yuri Sokolow from the Soviet Union.

At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 Yamamoto won his first fight against Udo Quellmalz from the GDR through Waza-ari. In the last sixteen he beat Joe Marchal from the United States by Ippon after 1:12 minutes. Yamamoto won the quarter-finals against the Austrian Josef Reiter after 4:52 minutes. In the semifinals he was defeated by Poland Janusz Pawłowski after 4:23 minutes. Yamamoto's fights had not lasted full time since his first fight and he also won the fight for bronze against New Zealander Brent Cooper after 1:40 minutes.

In the year after the Olympic Games, Yamamoto retired from the 1989 World Championships in Belgrade in the first round against the Mongols Bonomatsoe Erdenebaatar . In 1990 Yamamoto finished third again at the Goodwill Games .
