João Derly (2012)

João Derly Nunes Junior (born June 2, 1981 in Porto Alegre ) is a former Brazilian judoka . He was world champion in 2005 and 2007. After his sporting career, he became a local and state politician.

Athletic career

The 1.63 m tall João Derly started in the weight class up to 56 kilograms. Here he won the South American Championships in 1997 and a week later a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. From 1998 he fought in the weight class up to 60 kilograms. At the World Youth Games in Moscow in 1998 he won a bronze medal. In 2000 he was junior world champion and won bronze at the student world championships. In 2001 he finished seventh at the World Championships in Munich . A month later he won a bronze medal at the Universiade 2001. At the end of September he won his first Brazilian championship title. In November 2001 he won a bronze medal at the Pan American championships.

In February 2002 he reached the finals at the Tournoi de Paris and was defeated there by the South Korean Choi Min-ho . In the four weeks that followed, Derly won the World Cup tournaments in Leonding, Prague and Warsaw. In August 2002, Derly was found guilty of doping control of taking diuretics at the South American Games , which he had taken to lose weight.

In 2005 he returned to the weight class up to 66 kilograms. In May he won the title at the Pan American Championships. At the 2005 World Championships in Cairo, he won the quarter-finals over the Cuban Yordanis Arencibia and in the semifinals over the Georgian Dawit Margoschwili . In the final he defeated the Japanese Masato Uchishiba . In early 2006 Derly won the Tournoi de Paris with a final victory over the Japanese Hiroyuki Akimoto . In July 2007 he won the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro . Two months later, the 2007 World Championships also took place in Rio de Janeiro . Derly defeated the Italian Giovanni Casale in the quarter -finals, the Armenian Armen Nazarjan in the semi-finals and Yordanis Arencibia in the final. At the Olympic Games in Beijing he defeated the South Korean Kim Ju-jin in his opening fight, in the round of 16 he was eliminated by Pedro Dias from Portugal.

In 2009 Derly won again at the Pan American Championships when he defeated the Argentinian Miguel Albarracin in the final . At the first Grand Slam tournament in Rio de Janeiro , he finished fifth in July 2009. In 2011 Derly took part in a few world cup tournaments, but dropped out early.

Political career

After his sporting career, João Derly went into politics. First he sat for the Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB) in the city council of Porto Alegre. From 2015 to 2019 he was a deputy in the 55th legislative assembly of Rio Grande do Sul , initially for the PCdoB, then switched to the Sustentabilidade speech . Since the beginning of 2019 he has been responsible for sports and leisure in the government of the state of Rio Grande do Sul under Governor Eduardo Leite .
