Ernst Battenberg (born January 9, 1927 in Stuttgart - Cannstatt ; † May 8, 1992 in Resle near Steingaden , Upper Bavaria ) was a German publisher .

Ernst Battenberg was born as the son of the administrative lawyer Ludwig Battenberg (1890–1964) and Sophie Johanna Battenberg. Böckheler (* 1892) born. During the Second World War , he had to finish his school years in Graefelfing near Munich with a secondary school diploma in 1944 . As a soldier he was captured by the Americans near Naples , in the course of which he ended up in Tennessee / USA. After his release and return to Germany, he began his studies in 1946 ( philosophy , art and theater history ) and received his doctorate in philosophy. He completed an apprenticeship as a publishing bookseller and was employed as a lecturer and sales manager in various publishing houses.

In 1954 he took care of the revival of the Bassermann'sche publishing bookstore , which he sold to the Falken-Verlag twenty years later . In 1956, Battenberg founded his own publishing house in Stuttgart, which he moved to Munich in 1962.

From 1965 he developed an extensive publishing program for coin collectors , which made his publishing house the largest specialist publisher for numismatic literature in Europe in 1977. His books in German, English and French were known in international specialist and collector circles. At the beginning of the 1980s, the publisher's turnover exceeded 300,000 books a year - not just literature on coins, but also on paper money , emergency money and antiques . Inexpensive facsimile editions of rare numismatic works were also part of his program.

In early 1990 he sold his publishing house to Weltbild Verlag Augsburg (later Munich) because of a serious illness .

Battenberg Verlag has been part of Gietl Verlag Regenstauf since 2005 . The traditional name "Battenberg Verlag" was retained and continued.
