Yves Delvingt

Yves Delvingt (born February 8, 1953 ) is a former French judoka . He was European Champion in 1977 and Vice World Champion in 1979.

Athletic career

The 1.66 m tall Yves Delvingt competed in the lightweight until 1976, in the weight class up to 63 kilograms. After the introduction of two new weight classes, he fought from 1977 in the half-light weight, the weight class up to 65 kilograms.

In 1975 he won his first French championship title in the lightweight. At the European Championships in Lyon in 1975 he won a bronze medal. In 1976 he was able to repeat this success at the European Championships in Kiev. He also won bronze at the 1976 World Military Championships. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, he defeated Enrique del Valle from Ecuador in his first fight after 2:50 minutes. In the last sixteen he won against the Japanese Yoshiharu Minami by a small score (koka). In the quarterfinals he was eliminated by Waza-ari against the Italian Felice Mariani .

In 1977 Yves Delvingt won his second French championship title in the half-light weight category. At the European Championships in 1977 in Ludwigshafen, he won the title by beating the Hungarian Ferenc Szabó in the final . The following year Yves Delvingt won his third French championship title. At the European Championships in Brussels in 1979 he won a bronze medal after losing to Nikolai Soloduchin from the Soviet Union in the semi-finals . At the end of 1979 the World Championships took place in Paris , Delvingt defeated the Briton Raymond Neenan in the quarter-finals and the Japanese Kiyosuke Sahara in the semi-finals. In the final he was defeated by Nikolai Soloduchin.

At the French championships in 1980, Yves Delvingt lost in the final to Jean-Pierre Hansen , his brother Guy Delvingt took one of the two third places. At the European Championships in Vienna in 1980, Yves Delvingt reached fifth place. At the end of his career, he entered the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. In his first fight he was defeated by the Mongol Tsendiin Damdin by a Yuko rating. In the hope round , Delvingt defeated Daniel François Fyfer from Zimbabwe with Ippon after 1:30 minutes and the Swede Wolfgang Biedron with a Yuko rating. In the battle for bronze, he was defeated by Poland's Janusz Pawłowski after 4:26 minutes and finished in fifth place.
