Vascha Margwelashvili

Wascha Margwelaschwili (born October 3, 1993 in Berdzenauli , Mingrelien and Upper Svaneti ) is a Georgian judoka . He was third in the world championship in 2017 and European champion in 2016.

Athletic career

The 1.67 m tall Wascha Margwelaschwili fought until 2013 in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kilograms. In 2012 he was runner-up in the U20 European Championships. At the end of 2012 he won his first Georgian championship title.

In 2014 he switched to half-light weight, the weight class up to 66 kilograms and won the Georgian championship title here. At the 2016 European Championships in Kazan , he defeated Russian Arsen Galstjan in the quarter-finals and Belarusian Dzmitryj Scherschan in the semi-finals . In the final Margwelaschwili defeated the British Colin Oates . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he was eliminated in his opening match against the Slovenian Adrian Gomboc .

At the beginning of 2017 Margwelaschwili reached third place at the Grand Slam tournament in Paris and won the Grand Prix in Düsseldorf. At the European Championships 2017 in Warsaw , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Slovak Matej Poliak . Four months later at the World Championships in Budapest he defeated the South Korean An Ba-ul in the quarterfinals . After his semi-final defeat by the Japanese Hifumi Abe , he won the battle for bronze against the second South Korean Kim Lim-hwan . In 2018 Margwelaschwili was eliminated from the 2018 European Championships against the German Michel Adam and from the World Championships in Baku against the German Sebastian Seidl . In October he won the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi .

In 2019 Margwelashvili reached the final of the Grand Slam in Paris and then lost to Denis Vieru from the Republic of Moldova. The 2019 European Championships took place as part of the 2019 European Games in Minsk. Margwelaschwili was defeated in the semifinals against the Italian Matteo Medves , in the fight for a bronze medal he defeated Denis Vieru. Two months later at the World Championships in Tokyo he was eliminated from Kim Lim-hwan. At the end of 2019, he finished third in the Masters tournament in Qingdao.
