Denis Vieru

Denis Vieru (born March 10, 1996 ) is a Moldovan judoka . He won a bronze medal at the 2019 Judo World Championships.

Career

Vieru won a bronze medal in super light weight at the Junior European Championships in 2015. Since 2016 he has been fighting in the half-light weight class, up to 66 kilograms. In 2016 he won this weight class at the U23 European Championships, and the following year he finished fifth. At the 2018 World Championships in Baku , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Japanese Hifumi Abe .

In February 2019 he won the Grand Slam in Paris , followed by a victory at the Grand Slam in Baku in May . At the European Championships held as part of the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Vieru lost to Georgian Bagrat Niniashvili in the quarter-finals and ended up in fifth place. At the Universiade in Naples he won the final against the Japanese Ranto Katsura . In August 2019, he defeated the Italian Manuel Lombardo in the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Tokyo . In the semifinals he lost to the South Korean Kim Lim-hwan , he won the battle for bronze against the Mongol Baskhuu Yondonperenlei .
