Michail Sergejewitsch Puljajew ( Russian Михаил Сергеевич Пуляев ; born June 22, 1987 in Podolsk ) is a Russian judoka . He was runner-up in 2014, 2015 and 2017.

Career

The 1.66 m tall Palyayev has been fighting in the half-light weight class , the weight class up to 66 kilograms , since 2007 . In 2008 he won his first World Cup tournament in Baku. In the same year he was Russian champion, in 2010 the second championship title followed. In 2011, he took fifth place at the Universiade in Shenzhen.

At the 2013 World Championships, he lost to the Brazilian Charles Chibana in the quarterfinals . In the battle for a bronze medal he lost to the Ukrainian Heorhij Santaraja . In early 2014 Palyayev won the Grand Slam tournament in Paris. At the 2014 European Championships in Montpellier, he reached the semi-finals with a victory over the Slovenian Adrian Gomboc , where he was defeated by the French David Larose . With a victory over Heorhij Santaraja, Palyayev secured his first international medal. Four months later at the World Championships in Chelyabinsk Palyayev defeated his compatriot Kamal Chan-Magomedow in the quarter-finals and the Japanese Kengo Takaichi in the semifinals . In the final he was defeated by the Japanese Masashi Ebinuma . At the 2015 European Championships held as part of the 2015 European Games in Baku , Puljajew defeated German Sebastian Seidl in the quarter-finals and lost to French Loïc Korval in the semi-finals . With a victory against Nijat Shikhalizada from Azerbaijan, Palyayev won a bronze medal. The 2015 World Championships took place two months after the European Games in Astana. In the quarter-finals, Puljajew defeated the German Seidl as in Baku. In the semifinals he defeated the Kazakh Yeldos Zhumakanov . After his defeat in the final against the South Korean An Ba-ul , he was vice world champion for the second time. In 2016 Palyayev won the Grand Slam tournament in Baku . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he was eliminated from his first fight against the Canadian Antoine Bouchard after 15 seconds due to a punishment.

At the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, he defeated the South Korean Kim Lim-hwan in the quarter-finals and the Israeli Tal Flicker in the semifinals . In the final he was defeated by the Japanese Hifumi Abe . A year later he lost at the 2018 World Championships in the quarter-finals against An Ba-ul and in the round of hope against Heorhij Santaraja, in the end he finished seventh.
