Richard Joseph "Rick" Meagher (born November 4, 1953 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach who served from 1979 to 1991 for the Montréal Canadiens , Hartford Whalers , New Jersey Devils and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League played.

Career

As a junior he played for Boston University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During the four years he was always one of the top scorers and played there with Vic Stanfield , Dave Silk and Mike Eruzione . Despite strong performances, however, he did not move into the field of vision of the NHL scouts and was not drafted.

In the summer of 1977, the Montreal Canadiens hired him as a free agent . In his three years in the organization of the Canadiens, however, he played almost exclusively for the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in the American Hockey League . Only in his last season 1979/80 he came to two NHL appearances for Montreal.

For the 1980/81 season he was given to the Hartford Whalers . In return, the Canadiens received, among other things, the draft law with which they later selected Dieter Hegen . In his first year he played often on the farm team of the Whalers, with the Binghamton Whalers in the AHL. In the following season he was able to prevail and proved his NHL suitability with 24 goals. Shortly after the start of the 1982/83 season , he moved to the New Jersey Devils . Here, too, he usually had a regular place in the three years and only had to briefly return to the AHL to the Maine Mariners .

The St. Louis Blues signed him for the 1985/86 season . While Bernie Federko made the offensive game at the Blues , Meagher was used as a defensive specialist. He was one of the best outnumbered players in the NHL and was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive attacker in the 1989/90 season . During this season he was also the team captain of the Blues.

After his active career, he was the coach of the Peoria Rivermen in the International Hockey League , the farm team of the Blues and assistant coach of the St. Louis Blues.
